The Nigerian Government is strengthening the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) as a strategic institution for developing the specialised manpower needed to address the country’s evolving security challenges, with renewed commitments to infrastructure development, military education and defence capacity building.
The Ministry of Defence, in a statement signed by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde, said the Minister, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), gave the assurance while receiving members of the University’s Governing Council in Abuja.
General Musa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming NAUB into a leading centre for military and civilian education, research and capacity development.
The Minister described specialised education as a critical pillar of national defence, stressing that the university would continue to equip military personnel and civilians with the technical, operational and technological skills required to address increasingly complex security challenges.
He further disclosed that the Ministry will work closely with the Armed Forces of Nigeria to maximise the 30 per cent admission quota reserved for military personnel, enabling more service members to acquire advanced academic and professional skills.
The meeting also reaffirmed a joint commitment to accelerate infrastructure development at the university.
A key component of the proposed expansion is the establishment of a Centre for Military Performance Management, described as the first of its kind in Africa. The centre is expected to advance research, leadership development, operational analysis and institutional performance across the defence sector.
The Ministry further stated that “the planned investments align with the Federal Government’s broader drive to build a digitally skilled workforce capable of supporting military modernisation, innovation and national development.”
Beyond serving military personnel, the university is expected to expand opportunities for ministry staff and civilian professionals seeking specialised education in technology and security-related disciplines.
Leading the University delegation, Pioneer Pro-Chancellor Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (Rtd) commended General Musa’s leadership and strategic vision, noting that sustained government support continues to strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture.
He also reaffirmed the University’s commitment to academic excellence, research and producing graduates capable of supporting national security priorities.
