President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to national unity, democratic stability and the enduring values of sacrifice and patriotic leadership as Nigeria marked the 60th memorial of the country’s first Military Head of State, the late General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi.
A statement by the Special Assistant to the Minister of Defence on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, said the President’s message was delivered in Umuahia by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), during a commemorative ceremony marking six decades since General Aguiyi-Ironsi’s death.
According to Katung-Babatunde, the President described the late military leader as a symbol of courage, discipline and selfless service whose legacy continues to inspire Nigeria’s nation-building efforts.

In the presidential message, General Musa stated that General Aguiyi-Ironsi distinguished himself as an outstanding professional soldier who became Nigeria’s first General Officer Commanding before assuming office as the country’s first Military Head of State during a defining period in national history.
He noted that although his tenure was brief, the late leader remained committed to preserving national unity, restoring stability and protecting the integrity of the Nigerian state.
President Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s determination to strengthen institutions that safeguard Nigeria’s democracy, stressing that mutual respect, justice, tolerance and shared national purpose remain essential to preserving the country’s unity and diversity.
The President conveyed the Federal Government’s appreciation to the Aguiyi-Ironsi family and commended the organisers for sustaining the annual remembrance, describing the preservation of national heroes’ legacies as vital to strengthening Nigeria’s collective identity and patriotic values.
Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, also paid tribute to the late Head of State, describing General Aguiyi-Ironsi as a patriot whose leadership during one of Nigeria’s most turbulent periods reflected profound sacrifice for national unity.
He urged future generations to honour that legacy by protecting peace, cohesion and the institutional integrity of the Armed Forces.
Governor Alex Otti welcomed national dignitaries to Umuahia, describing General Aguiyi-Ironsi as one of Abia State’s most distinguished sons whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire good governance, justice and national reconciliation.
