The Chairman of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), Mr. Patrick Enyi, has reaffirmed the commission’s readiness to conduct a free, fair and credible local government election scheduled for August 22, 2026.
The election will be held across the state’s 171 electoral wards and 2,947 polling units in the 13 local government areas.
Mr. Enyi gave the assurance in Abakaliki during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting organised by the commission as part of preparations for the forthcoming chairmanship and councillorship elections.
He said the commission had concluded critical preparations, including the training of ad hoc personnel and the compilation of the voters’ register, adding that the register would soon be displayed for public scrutiny.
The EBSIEC Chairman stressed that the commission would not tolerate any act capable of undermining the integrity of the electoral process.
“We have obtained the voters’ register from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and it will soon be displayed to the public.
“Today’s engagement is another milestone in our preparations, and I assure all stakeholders that the local government election will hold on August 22, 2026,” he said.
Mr. Enyi further assured political parties and candidates that the commission would remain impartial and that winners would emerge strictly through the votes cast by the electorates.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Information, Voter Education and Publicity, Hon. Collins Agbo, said the stakeholders’ meeting was organised to update political parties and other critical stakeholders on the commission’s level of preparedness.
According to him, EBSIEC has carried out extensive voter sensitisation and public awareness campaigns across the 13 local government areas of the state.
He noted that representatives of political parties, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the media and other stakeholders were invited to collectively chart a course for a peaceful, transparent and hitch-free election.
A major highlight of the event was the unveiling of the commission’s official logo, mission and vision by the EBSIEC Chairman, Mr. Patrick Enyi.
The meeting was attended by members of the commission, including the Commissioner for Information, Voter Education and Publicity, Hon. Collins Agbo; the Secretary to the Commission, Dr. Fidelis Uguru; the Commissioner for Logistics and Field Operations, Dr. Hyacinth Nwoba; the Commissioner for Legal and Security Matters, Barrister Stanley Odunwa; and the Commissioner for Finance and Accounts, Dr. Emmanuel Ibiam, among others.
Also in attendance were chairmen of political parties, the Ebonyi State Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Mrs. Nwigwe Queendalene, representatives of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, civil society organisations and security agencies.
