The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has recovered large quantities of vandalised public infrastructure and confiscated unauthorised official and diplomatic vehicle number plates in a renewed crackdown on criminal activities across Abuja.
Speaking during a press briefing at the FCT Police Command Headquarters, the Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi said the recoveries were made through intelligence-led operations and proactive anti-crime patrols across Maitama, Garki, Durumi, Jabi, Apo Legislative, Lugbe and Nyanya.
Sanusi said the recovered items include drainage covers, solar street lights, armoured high-voltage electricity cables and internet communication cables, noting that their theft had caused significant economic losses and posed serious risks to public safety.
According to him, the vandalism of public infrastructure has contributed to road accidents, injuries to pedestrians, increased street crime in poorly lit areas and prolonged power outages in affected communities.
Five suspects identified as Godwin Aja, Mustapha Nasiru, Ibrahim Garba, Abdulrasheed Sale and Dabarani Mujitafa were arrested in connection with the recovered exhibits.
The police commissioner warned scrap dealers, receivers and buyers of stolen public infrastructure that the command had launched extensive investigations to dismantle the entire supply and distribution network for stolen public assets.
He announced that the recovered infrastructure would be handed over to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for reinstallation to restore essential public services.
Sanusi also disclosed that the command had uncovered a network involved in the unauthorised use, production and distribution of official government and diplomatic vehicle number plates.
He said investigations revealed that criminals used the fake official plate numbers to evade security checks and facilitate criminal activities within the FCT.
The confiscated plate numbers were recovered from several suspects who remain in police custody and will be arraigned after investigations are concluded.
