The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has directed the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) to provide him with hourly updates on seismic activity around Abuja following the earth tremor recorded in the Federal Capital Territory.
Alake, who is currently in Washington, D.C., United States, engaging American investors on joint venture opportunities in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector, also urged Abuja residents to remain calm and continue with their normal activities.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister, Lara Owoeye-Wise, Alake said proactive measures had been put in place to safeguard lives and property while the situation is closely monitored.

The NGSA had reported that an earth tremor shook some buildings in Abuja on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. According to the agency, its Seismic Monitoring Station in Utako recorded the tremor at 11:23:27 a.m.
The agency said the tremor originated at a depth of about one kilometre, lasted for approximately five seconds, and covered a distance of about four kilometres.
However, the NGSA described the event as a “light event” of I to II magnitude on the Mercalli scale, stressing that it posed no threat to lives or property.
The agency said the tremor was a characteristic surface-earth event that could cause discomfort and fear but was not expected to result in destruction.
Alake assured residents that the NGSA would continue monitoring the situation and provide regular updates as necessary.
