Lagos is poised to host a landmark sporting event as the 2026 Commonwealth Federation Fencing Championships prepare to unfold on African soil for the first time.
Athletes and delegates from 20 nations have gathered in Nigeria’s commercial capital for the prestigious Senior Championships, scheduled to run from August 9–13 at Rugby School Nigeria in the Atlantic City, Victoria Island, Lagos State.
The six-day tournament will feature participating nations including Australia, Bangladesh, Botswana, Cyprus, England, Ghana, Guernsey, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, New Zealand, Niger, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, Singapore, Togo, Wales, and host nation Nigeria.
A Dream Realised
At a pre-tournament press conference, Nigeria Fencing Federation President Adeyinka Samuel described the occasion as historic and the fulfilment of a vision decades in the making.
“This is a dream come true,” Samuel declared.
“Since my active fencing years, I have envisioned Nigeria hosting an event of this magnitude. We have already staged six international competitions, including the FIE-sanctioned Junior World Cup and African Championships, but this championship opens even greater opportunities.
“Our athletes will gain invaluable experience competing against some of the best fencers from across the Commonwealth. My ultimate dream is to see a Nigerian qualify for the Olympic Games after narrowly missing that chance in 2008,” he said.

Commonwealth Fencing Federation President Marie-France Dufour commended Nigeria’s meticulous preparations and the evident enthusiasm of its athletes.
She confirmed that Nigeria surpassed Australia to secure hosting rights after meeting all federation criteria, expressing confidence that the event would significantly boost fencing’s popularity across Africa and inspire greater continental participation.
Local Organising Committee member Olaitan Ogunbiyi praised the committee’s dedication and predicted a smooth, hitch-free tournament.
Athletes Ready to Shine
Nigerian athletes have voiced their excitement and determination ahead of the competition. Nigeria’s second-highest-ranked male fencer globally, Folayemi Akinyosoye, pledged to lead the team to a strong performance.
Meanwhile, the nation’s top-ranked female fencer, Adebodunrin Thomas, expressed her resolve to surpass her recent showing at the World Championships in Hong Kong.
“My aim is to continue improving at every tournament and, together with my teammates, make our nation proud,” Thomas said.
New Categories
The competition will span Senior, U-23, Veteran, and Wheelchair categories. Notably, the U-23 and Wheelchair events will make their debut in Lagos, adding exciting new dimensions to the medal contests.
