The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for the provision of Aeronautical Meteorological Services at the Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports.
The achievement followed a directive by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and sustain Nigeria’s improved rating with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
The certification was awarded following a successful third-party audit conducted by Certech Inc., Canada, between 20 and 23 July 2026. The audit assessed NiMet’s products and services provided to airlines at the three airports and found them to be compliant with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 standard.

Reacting to the development, NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, described the achievement as a significant milestone for the agency.
“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team led by Rotimi Adenubi have been working round the clock to achieve this feat,” Anosike said.
With the latest certification, NiMet’s Quality Management System now covers aeronautical meteorological services at eight Nigerian international airports.
They include Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; Yola Modibbo Adama International Airport; Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri; and Osubi Airport.
NiMet had previously been recertified to the ISO 9001:2015 standard at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Aminu Kano International Airport, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Enugu International Airport and Port Harcourt International Airport.
The certification is valid for three years, with annual surveillance and maintenance audits scheduled before the next recertification exercise in 2029.
In a letter dated 26 July 2026, addressed to Professor Anosike, Certech Lead Auditor and Director, Frank Strohmeier, said the audit objectives were achieved following a systematic process audit focused on risks and objectives under the ISO 9001:2015 standard.
According to the letter, the third-party audit resulted in the issuance of a revised certificate confirming that “the Nigerian Meteorological Agency quality management system conforms to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry.”
The certification is particularly significant because it represents the first time NiMet’s aeronautical meteorological products and services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports have undergone the ISO 9001:2015 certification audit.
He assured that the agency would continue to raise its operational standards, stating, “We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations.”
The latest certification underscores NiMet’s commitment to quality, safety and internationally recognised standards in the delivery of meteorological services critical to Nigeria’s aviation industry.
