2027: Presidential, National Assembly Campaigns Kick Off

By Hauwa Gidado, Abuja

Campaigns for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections have officially begun, setting the stage for a major political contest ahead of the January 16, 2027 elections.

President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is seeking a second term, with his campaign expected to focus on his administration’s economic reforms, infrastructure development, security, job creation and food security initiatives.

The administration is expected to highlight the removal of the petrol subsidy and foreign exchange reforms, which it says were necessary to stabilise the economy, improve government revenue and attract investment.

President Tinubu has defended the reforms, saying they have strengthened economic management and restored confidence in the Nigerian economy, while opposition parties have criticised the policies over their impact on citizens and the cost of living.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is contesting the presidency on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi is also seeking the presidency on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Other presidential contenders include African Action Congress (AAC) candidate Omoyele Sowore and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Senator Sandy Onor.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is also listed among the presidential contenders on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), while Suleiman Dikwa of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and Dr Chibuzor Okereke of the Labour Party (LP) are also contesting.

Other candidates include former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP); Adewole Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP); Okwori Ada Elizabeth Frederick of the National Democratic Party (NDP); Chukwu Anita Zugwai of the Young Progressives Party (YPP); Rufai Adekunle Omoaje of the Action Alliance (AA); Adenuga Sunday of the Boot Party (BP); Memeh Samuel of the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA); Nwanyanwu Daniel Danerechukwu of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP); Okereke Iken Esther of the National Rescue Movement (NRM); Abbas-Bin Aliyu of the Action Democratic Party (ADP); and Yusuf Kabiru of the Action People’s Party (APP).

With campaigns now underway, the candidates and their parties are expected to intensify mobilisation across the country and present their programmes to voters.

The 2027 election is expected to focus on major national issues, including the economy, security, employment, infrastructure, food security and governance, as voters assess the records and policy proposals of the various candidates.
