Rivers State Government Unveils 105-Bed Hospital

By Iquo Williams, Port Harcourt

The Rivers State Government in southern Nigeria has unveiled a 105-bed secondary healthcare facility in Omoku to improve access to medical services for residents of the oil-producing region and surrounding communities.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who unveiled the Omoku Zonal Hospital, said the project was part of his administration’s efforts to expand access to quality healthcare across the state.

He said; “the facility would serve residents of Omoku, Egbema, Ndoni, Ahoada and other communities in the Rivers West Senatorial District.”

We know the importance of this and that is why we pay very serious attention to the well-being of our people as a government,” Governor Fubara said.

The Governor described the facility as particularly important because of Omoku’s role as an oil and gas hub, saying ‘adequate healthcare services were needed to support the area’s development.”

He urged residents, community leaders, traditional rulers and youths to protect the hospital’s infrastructure and equipment against vandalism and theft.

The Oba of Ogbaland, Dr Nwachukwu Nnam Obuoha Obi III, who commissioned the facility, commended the state government for completing the project.

Obi also commended the administration for the reconstruction of the Elele-Omoku Road, saying “the interventions had strengthened residents’ sense of government presence in the area.”

The Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr Vincent Wachukwu, described the hospital as a secondary healthcare facility and referral centre for communities across the Orashi region.

He said the three-storey facility has outpatient clinics, laboratories, operating theatres, intensive care units, paediatric wards, obstetrics and gynaecology wards, accident and emergency services, and radiology facilities.

Wachukwu said “the hospital would provide accessible and affordable secondary healthcare while supporting professional training and medical student postings.”

He added that the facility would strengthen healthcare delivery and contribute to improved maternal, newborn and child health outcomes in the region.
