FCTA Trains Health Workers to Strengthen Emergency Response

Edward Samuel, Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has launched a four-day Basic Life Support training for health workers from seven hospitals to strengthen emergency response and reduce preventable deaths.

The American Heart Association-certified training, held at Asokoro District Hospital, is bringing together health workers from hospitals in Asokoro, Maitama, Wuse, Gwarinpa, Kuje, Kubwa and Nyanya.

Declaring the training open, the Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr Dolapo Fasawe, said the programme would equip health workers with practical skills to respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide life-saving care while awaiting further intervention.

Fasawe said the initiative would also support the National Community CPR Initiative by enabling participants to transfer the knowledge gained to their colleagues and members of the public.

She said the FCTA was working towards establishing Code Blue Teams across hospitals in the territory to ensure that patients requiring urgent attention receive timely care.

According to her, the training would be extended to other hospitals, while the necessary equipment and support would be provided to strengthen emergency response and improve patient care.

The medical director of Asokoro District Hospital, Dr Oluseyi Ashaolu, described the training as timely, noting that prompt intervention during emergencies could make the difference between life and death.

Ashaolu said the skills acquired by participants would help reduce avoidable deaths, particularly in situations where immediate medical intervention was critical.

The Training Coordinator and Consultant Anaesthetist, Dr Rosemary Nwokorie, said the programme was being conducted in batches, with the first batch scheduled for August 21 and 22, while the second batch would hold on September 4 and 5, 2026.

Nwokorie added that the training included a “Stop the Bleeding” course designed to equip health workers with techniques for controlling severe bleeding in trauma patients before definitive medical care is provided.

She said the initiative was designed to strengthen the capacity of health workers to respond effectively to emergencies and improve survival outcomes.

The FCTA said the programme formed part of its broader efforts to strengthen emergency medical services and ensure health workers are adequately prepared to provide immediate care when patients require urgent attention.
