Osun Election: APC Candidate Calls for Calm

Temitope Mustapha, Abuja

The All Progressives Congress candidate in the just-concluded Osun State governorship election, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, has called on the re-elected Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to prevail on his supporters to maintain peace, law and order.

Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO, made the call on Friday while speaking with State House correspondents after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Despite not winning the election, Oyebamiji appealed to APC supporters and residents of Osun State to remain calm, stressing that the interests of the people should remain paramount in the conduct of elections and governance.

The most important thing is to run every election with a peaceful mind. It is important for us Nigerians to know that government is about people, and because it is about people, it is important that we need to be peaceful,” he said.

On whether the APC would challenge the outcome of the election, Oyebamiji said the party was still scrutinising the results and other records from the poll before deciding on its next course of action.

“For now, the APC is still examining the books, and by the time we spread our sheets, we’ll be able to get back to the public on what our opinions are and what decisions we want to take, but the take-home is that they should be calm,” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party winner of the August 15, 2026 governorship election after he polled 511,067 votes to defeat Oyebamiji of the APC, who garnered 444,815 votes.

Adeleke won in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured 11. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress finished third with 17,180 votes.

The victory handed Adeleke a second term as governor.

Adeleke first contested the governorship election in 2018, when he narrowly lost to the APC candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, following a supplementary election. He returned in 2022 and defeated Oyetola to become governor.
