A Cleric, Rev. Dr. Isaac Komolafe has called for global recognition of grandparents and greater attention to their welfare, describing them as critical to the preservation of family values and intergenerational knowledge.
Komolafe made the call in Abuja during activities marking the inaugural observance of International Grandparents’ Day on September 1, 2026.
He said; “grandparents play significant roles in strengthening families and shaping younger generations through mentorship, caregiving, moral guidance and the transmission of cultural values and traditions.”
According to him, “the contributions of grandparents deserve greater recognition, particularly at a time when changing family structures and social dynamics are affecting traditional intergenerational relationships.”
Komolafe noted that various groups, including fathers, mothers, women and children, have dedicated days of recognition, while the contributions of grandparents have received comparatively less global attention.
“Today, we celebrate grandparents for their love, wisdom, sacrifices, guidance, and invaluable contributions to the family and society,” he said.
The cleric said the observance was intended to encourage families, communities, faith-based organisations and governments to recognise and support older people while promoting stronger relationships between generations.
Komolafe explained that the initiative would also provide an opportunity to preserve the knowledge, experiences and values passed down by grandparents to younger generations.
He expressed hope that the observance would gain wider acceptance and eventually receive official international recognition, stressing this would help draw sustained attention to the dignity, welfare and contributions of grandparents globally.
