Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu has called for increased opportunities for Nigerians, particularly adults, to acquire literacy and knowledge, describing education as critical to human and national development.
Mrs Tinubu made the call in a message to mark the 2026 International Literacy Day, observed on September 8.
She said literacy remained fundamental to personal empowerment and national development, in line with the theme of this year’s observance, “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity.”
The First Lady said; “expanding access to literacy would help create opportunities for more citizens to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to improve their lives and contribute to national development.”
“In Nigeria, there is a need to give more attention to adult education. When adults can read, write and acquire basic digital and financial skills, they are better equipped to improve their livelihoods, grow their businesses, make informed decisions, and support their children’s education.
“This important milestone provides another opportunity to renew our commitment to ensuring that no Nigerian is denied the opportunity to learn because of age or circumstance,” she explained.
The First Lady enjoined Nigerians to work together to build a more literate, productive, and prosperous nation.
