Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu has called for collective efforts to sustain peace across the country as Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the 2026 International Day of Peace.
Mrs Tinubu made the call in a message to mark the day, with the theme, “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” with emphasis on the role of individuals and communities in building and sustaining peace.
She said “lasting peace required the commitment and participation of everyone, stressing that peace must begin in the home and extend to schools, workplaces and communities.”
According to her, peace is strengthened through tolerance, patience, justice, mutual respect and dialogue.
She urged Nigerians to embrace these values and work collectively towards sustaining peace in the country.
The First Lady also urged citizens to shun anything that divides the country and live in peace with one another.
“I encourage all Nigerians to reject division and embrace the values that unite us as one people. Let us invest in peace through our words, choices, and actions every day. Happy International Day of Peace 2026,” She added.
The International Day of Peace is observed annually on September 21. The United Nations General Assembly established the day in 1981, while in 2001, it designated the day as a period of non-violence and ceasefire.
