Former Super Falcons of Nigeria players based across Europe have reunited for a novelty football match, aimed at strengthening friendship and reconnecting former teammates in Helsinki, Finland.
The event was organised by former Nigerian international footballer and Olympian, Ayisat Yusuf, who is based in Finland and was recently appointed Assistant Coach of the Nigerian senior women’s football team, the Super Falcons and the executives of the Super Falcons.
Yusuf, who holds a UEFA B coaching licence and works as a sports instructor in Finland, represented Nigeria at three FIFA Women’s World Cups, four African championships and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Speaking on the significance of the gathering, Yusuf said the reunion was important, particularly as some of the former players had not seen one another for more than a decade.
“For me, bringing us together was very important, especially after being apart and not seeing some of us for over a decade,” she highlighted.
“Football is more than a game; it is a powerful tool that connects people, creates friendships and brings us together regardless of where life takes us.”
She expressed delight that the former Super Falcons players were able to reunite, share memories and create new ones through the event.
“I’m so happy we were all able to come together, reconnect, share beautiful memories, have fun and create new ones. What a beautiful and memorable time together,” Yusuf mentioned.
Yusuf thanked everyone who travelled to Finland to participate in the special gathering, describing their presence as a demonstration of the enduring bond created through football.
She also wished the former players safe journeys back to their respective countries and urged them to continue to cherish the memories and friendships they have built through the sport.
