APC Chairman Urges Northern Support For President Tinubu’s Re-election

The National Chairman of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has called on voters in northern Nigeria to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

He made this call citing infrastructure projects, social investment programmes and what he described as inclusive leadership.

Yilwatda made the appeal at the inauguration of the Arewa for Asiwaju (A4A) campaign secretariat in Abuja, where he urged Northerners to back the Tinubu-Shettima ticket for a second term.

His remarks reflect the ruling party’s efforts to build support ahead of the 2027 general election, rather than an established consensus across the region.

The APC chairman highlighted road projects, including the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway and a proposed extension towards Maiduguri, as well as the Trans-Saharan Super Highway, the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline, railway development and irrigation initiatives.

He also cited healthcare programmes, social investment schemes and plans to build 300 dams for irrigation as evidence of the administration’s commitment to northern Nigeria. Yilwatda further praised Vice President Kashim Shettima’s role in the government, describing Tinubu’s leadership as inclusive of Nigerians from different ethnic and religious backgrounds.
However, the projects and programmes cited at the event were presented by APC leaders as reasons for supporting the administration, and their mention does not independently establish their completion, effectiveness or impact on communities.

Former Jigawa State Governor and A4A Director-General, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, said the organisation’s endorsement was based on its assessment of the government’s performance rather than political sentiment. He pointed to infrastructure investments, power projects, social intervention programmes and the student loan scheme as areas of progress.

On security, Badaru acknowledged that significant challenges remained, although he said improvements in some parts of the North had enabled residents to return to their farms and communities to rebuild.

His remarks underscored the continuing importance of security in assessing the administration’s performance in a region affected by insurgency, banditry and other forms of violence.

Badaru also argued that the government had taken difficult economic and policy decisions that previous administrations had postponed. He pledged that A4A would mobilise support across northern states, local governments, wards and polling units.

The organisation plans to use its new secretariat to coordinate campaign activities and engage women, young people and other communities ahead of the election. According to Badaru, the group intends to communicate the administration’s achievements while listening to public concerns.

The event was attended by Vice President Shettima, northern political leaders and other stakeholders.

With the 2027 election approaching, the APC’s mobilisation efforts highlight the political importance of northern Nigeria, a region with significant electoral influence.

Whether the party can translate its campaign into broad voter support will depend, in part, on how voters assess the government’s record on security, economic conditions, infrastructure and public welfare.
