APC Chairman Urges Nigerians to Defend Democracy

Hauwa Gidado, Abuja

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has called on Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day to recommit themselves to the ideals of unity, patriotism, good governance and national development, while urging continued support for the reform agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

In a message marking the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, Yilwatda described the date as one of the most significant milestones in Nigeria’s democratic history, symbolising the courage and sacrifices of patriots who fought for justice, electoral integrity and the sovereignty of the Nigerian people.

“Democracy Day is not merely another public holiday; it is a solemn reminder of our collective struggle for freedom, representative government, and the right of every Nigerian to determine the destiny of our nation through democratic means,” he said.

The APC chairman noted that June 12 offers an opportunity for citizens to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic progress and renew their commitment to protecting institutions that uphold constitutional governance.

According to him, democracy has created avenues for peaceful political participation, accountability in governance, protection of fundamental rights and greater citizen involvement in nation-building.

“Every generation has a responsibility to defend democracy. The sacrifices made by our democratic heroes should never be forgotten, nor should we allow actions capable of undermining our constitutional order,” he stated.

Yilwatda also called on political leaders, civil society groups, the media, religious bodies and youth organisations to promote dialogue, tolerance, respect for the rule of law and peaceful participation in the democratic process.

The APC chairman further urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of the economic and institutional reforms being implemented by President Bola Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fundamentally designed to reposition Nigeria for sustainable growth, economic stability, infrastructure development, improved social welfare, expanded investment opportunities and enhanced prosperity for future generations,” he said.

The APC chairman maintained that the administration’s ongoing reforms are aimed at strengthening institutions, creating jobs, improving the investment climate and building a more competitive and inclusive economy.

He appealed to Nigerians to remain hopeful and united, stressing that democracy can only thrive when citizens defend it through responsibility, patriotism and mutual respect.

“Our greatest tribute to the heroes of June 12 is to preserve the democracy they fought for and work together to build a peaceful, prosperous and united Nigeria for generations yet unborn,” he added.

Yilwatda wished Nigerians a peaceful Democracy Day celebration and reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity and supporting policies that advance the nation’s progress and prosperity.
