British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has backed the principles of immigration reforms proposed by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, amid speculation that political opposition could force changes to the plans.
According to reports, he was asked whether he supported extending the qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain from five to 15 years for some migrants.

Burnham said he supported the principles behind the proposals.
“The home secretary is right, in my view, to bring forward changes that are based on the principle that settlement is a right to be earned, not just something that is granted automatically,” he said.
Burnham added that Mahmood would announce the final decision soon.
