The Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has declared three days of mourning across the state following the death of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, the first civilian governor of the defunct Gongola State and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Tukur, an elder statesman, businessman and politician, died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, after a brief illness.
In a condolence message, Governor Fintiri described the former governor’s death as a monumental loss to Adamawa State and Nigeria, praising his courage, foresight, patriotism and lifelong commitment to public service.

The Governor said the late Tukur made remarkable contributions to the development of Adamawa State and Nigeria, noting that his wealth of experience and wisdom earned him an honourable place in the nation’s history.
“Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was a colossus who made remarkable contributions to the development of Adamawa State and Nigeria,” Governor Fintiri said.
The governor added that he would personally miss Tukur’s wise counsel and extensive experience on issues concerning the state and the nation.
According to him, “Tukur’s death has created a significant void that would be difficult to fill.”
As part of the mourning period, Governor Fintiri directed that all government flags across Adamawa State be flown at half-mast for three days in honour of the late elder statesman.
The Governor extended his condolences to Tukur’s family, friends, associates and the people of Adamawa State, urging them to draw strength from his legacy of service and leadership.
Governor Fintiri also prayed Almighty Allah to forgive Tukur’s shortcomings, grant him Aljannah Firdaus and give his family the fortitude to bear the loss.
The former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bamanga Tukur died at the age of 90.
He is survived by two wives and 18 children, among them the Secretary to the Government of Adamawa State, Awwal Tukur.
