The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has sealed off Fortune Rice Mills Limited in Kano State over alleged non-compliance with environmental regulations.
This comes after complaints from residents about dust emissions and offensive odour from the facility.
The enforcement action, carried out on Monday, was led by the North West Zonal Director of NESREA, Dr. Mudashiru Raheem, after investigations confirmed violations of the National Environmental (Air Quality Control) Regulations 2014 and the National Environmental (Food, Beverages and Tobacco Sector) Regulations 2023.

According to NESREA, the action followed repeated compliance notices issued to the company, which were allegedly ignored despite concerns over the impact of its operations on public health and the environment.
Speaking on the development, the Director General of NESREA, Professor Innocent Barikor, condemned what he described as the “reckless attitude” of some facilities towards environmental safety and citizens’ wellbeing.
“The health of citizens and the environment must not be sacrificed on the altar of economic gain,” Barikor stated.
Barikor stressed that the agency would continue to enforce environmental laws and ensure industries operate within approved standards.
He also urged Nigerians to take greater responsibility for protecting the environment by reporting environmental infractions and pollution incidents to the agency.
Residents in parts of Kano had reportedly raised concerns over persistent dust pollution and offensive odour allegedly emanating from the rice processing plant, prompting NESREA’s intervention.
The agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the environment through strict enforcement of environmental regulations across industrial sectors nationwide.
