By: Glory Ohagwu, Abuja

The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced plans to inaugurate the Ibom International Hospital and Ibom Medical City Project, a landmark healthcare initiative aimed at enhancing medical services, research, and innovation across the region.

Speaking on the development, the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Aniekan Umanah, described the project as a strategic investment designed to strengthen healthcare delivery, promote medical innovation, and position Akwa Ibom State as a leading destination for quality healthcare services and medical tourism in Africa.

The unveiling ceremony is scheduled to hold on June 23rd, 2026, at the Ibom Medical City site along the Uyo–Ikot Ekpene Road.

The event will be attended by key stakeholders in the health sector, including the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, who will serve as the Distinguished Special Guest of Honour.

Also expected at the event is the National Coordinator of the Presidential Initiative on Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain, Dr. Abdu Mukhtar.

According to Umanah, the Ibom Medical City Project is being implemented through the collaborative efforts of the Ministries of Health, Housing, and Special Duties.

He noted that the initiative is designed to create an integrated healthcare ecosystem that combines clinical care, medical education, research, innovation, accommodation, and wellness services within a single development framework.

The project is being supervised by Tokiye Integrated Medical Services (TIMS), a healthcare project development and management firm with operations in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

The Commissioner disclosed that the initiative emerged following stakeholder endorsement during the ARISE Health Sector Town Hall Meeting organised by the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health in July 2025.

Key features of the project include a 10-storey, 350-bed international hospital with 24 specialty departments, residential accommodation for healthcare professionals, medical research and training centres, pharmaceutical and laboratory facilities, as well as digital health infrastructure aimed at supporting advanced healthcare delivery and medical tourism.

“The state government has extended invitations to healthcare stakeholders, development partners, members of the public, and the media to witness the unveiling of what it describes as a significant milestone in the transformation of healthcare services in the state”.

Observers believe the project underscores the growing emphasis on integrated healthcare systems that combine treatment, research, training, innovation, and workforce development in line with ongoing national healthcare reforms.

As Akwa Ibom State prepares for the official launch, attention will focus on the project’s potential to improve healthcare outcomes, support Nigeria’s health sector objectives, and enhance the country’s reputation as a destination for world-class medical services.
