Anambra State First Lady, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has urged greater support for skills training as part of rehabilitation efforts, following the graduation of residents of the Anambra Rehabilitation Home in Nteje, Oyi Local Government Area.
The call highlights the wider importance of rehabilitation and skills acquisition in Nigeria, where practical training can help vulnerable people rebuild their confidence, achieve greater independence and reintegrate into society.
Soludo made the call during a visit to the rehabilitation home on Sunday, expressing excitement over the progress recorded by residents, some of whom had been medically certified fit to return home.
She said the decision by some residents to remain at the centre to acquire practical skills demonstrated the value of combining medical recovery with empowerment that prepares people for life beyond institutional care.
“Rehabilitation is not just about helping people recover; it is about giving them the opportunity to rediscover their abilities, regain their confidence and find a productive place in society,” she said.
According to her, the residents had been trained in various skills and graduated after demonstrating the knowledge and abilities they acquired during their training.
“They were trained in various skills, and today, they proudly graduated, demonstrating what they had learned with confidence and remarkable skill,” Soludo said.
The First Lady also donated relief materials, other items and cash gifts to the residents as part of efforts to support their welfare and rehabilitation.
She said the need for society to provide people undergoing rehabilitation with opportunities to rebuild their lives, saying, “Every human deserves a second chance.”
Soludo commended the caregivers for their role in the residents’ recovery and praised the graduates for choosing to learn, grow and move forward, expressing optimism that they would continue to make progress and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
