Anambra First Lady Seeks United Action Against Drug Abuse

The Wife of the Anambra State Governor and Founder of the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo initiative, Dr Nonye Soludo, has called for stronger collaboration among governments, families, schools, communities and civil society organisations to tackle drug abuse and illicit trafficking, particularly among young Nigerians.

In a message marking the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Dr Soludo said this year’s theme, “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses”, highlights the need for coordinated and practical strategies in prevention, treatment, enforcement and social support.

She stressed that young people should be equipped with the right values, education, life skills and economic opportunities to resist peer pressure and other harmful influences.

“Young people must be empowered with the knowledge, values and opportunities that enable them to make healthy choices and resist drug abuse,” she said.

Dr Soludo urged parents and guardians to maintain open communication with their children, closely monitor their activities and provide the emotional support needed to guide them through adolescence.

She also called on schools, religious institutions and community leaders to intensify public awareness campaigns on the dangers of substance abuse while advocating the inclusion of drug prevention education and mentorship programmes in school curricula.

The governor’s wife further appealed to government agencies, healthcare professionals and development partners to expand access to mental health services, counselling, rehabilitation and vocational training for individuals affected by drug dependence.

According to her, people battling substance abuse deserve compassion, professional care and opportunities for rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.

Reaffirming her commitment through the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo initiative, Dr Soludo said the programme would continue to promote preventive healthcare, youth empowerment and community well-being across Anambra State.

She urged Nigerians to join hands in strengthening families and building safer, healthier communities where young people can thrive free from the dangers of drug abuse.
