The Anambra State Government has introduced a plea bargain initiative for eligible suspects facing criminal prosecution as part of efforts to decongest correctional centres, reduce court caseloads and improve the administration of criminal justice.
The initiative excludes suspects standing trial for murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and rape.
The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), announced the policy in a statement issued on Wednesday in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
Nweke said the initiative forms part of the state’s ongoing criminal justice reforms aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the justice system in line with the reform agenda of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.

He disclosed that he had directed all prosecutors in the state to provide eligible defendants with the prescribed plea bargain forms before their pleas are taken in court.
The directive, dated July 22, 2026, applies to all offences created under the laws of Anambra State, except murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and rape.
According to the Attorney General, the initiative marks the first time a state government in Nigeria has extended plea bargain opportunities on such a broad scale to eligible persons facing criminal prosecution.
Under the arrangement, defendants who voluntarily plead guilty may receive reduced sentences or other concessions, subject to court approval and the provisions of applicable law.
Nweke said the policy is expected to speed up the resolution of criminal cases, reduce prolonged pre-trial detention, ease overcrowding in correctional facilities and further strengthen the state’s criminal justice system, while ensuring that suspects accused of serious violent crimes continue to face full prosecution.
