By Anulika Menanya, Lagos

Denmark’s Anders Lind has successfully defended his World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Lagos title, beating Korea Republic’s Oh Junsung 4-1 in the final at the Molade Okoya Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, Nigeria.

Returning for his third appearance, the 27-year-old’s commanding strokes and relentless pace carried him to victory.  The World No. 17 Lind led from the first set, 11-6, 11-9, and 11-5, but struggled and lost the fourth set 10-12. He, however, regained form and claimed the final set 11-8.

After the win, the Dane said he feels very special to have won the back-to-back titles in Lagos, which he calls home.

“I’m so happy right now, it’s one of the best feelings in the world. It is not often that you win tournaments,” Lind said. “This is my fifth, and I have been playing for many, many years, so it is very special.”

“And to take the defending title back-to-back in Lagos, I guess I feel at home here. I feel at home to play my best game.”

The women’s final told a different tale as Japan’s Satsuki Odo, the tournament’s top seed, beat compatriot and defending champion Honoka Hashimoto 4-1 (11-3, 5-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-4) to claim the title.

Odo’s victory crowned her as the new queen of Lagos, a champion whose attacking game lit up Africa’s premier table tennis stage.
