APC Chieftain Applauds Opposition Inclusion in Presidential Campaign Council

By Zeniat Abubakar Abuja

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Chief Sam Onuigbo, has described the inclusion of prominent opposition politicians in President Bola Tinubu’s Presidential Campaign Council as a welcome development and a reflection of democratic practice.

Onuigbo said the appointment of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as well as governors Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State and Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, demonstrated their support for president Tinubu’s administration and its policies.

He made the remarks on Thursday in an interview with Journalists in Abuja Nigeria’s capital.

Onuigbo, who represented Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency in the 8th and 9th National Assemblies, said the appointments reflected a democratic alliance built on shared commitment to effective governance.

According to him, the participation of politicians from opposition parties in the campaign council underscores the ability of democracy to accommodate diverse political interests in pursuit of a common goal.

“Democracy is a system of government that does not use force of the barrel or the gun, but applies consensus and understanding.

“The bottom line is having a good government that works to provide the highest happiness for the highest number of people, which Wike and others have seen and aligned with,” he said.

The APC chieftain described the inclusion of opposition figures in the campaign team as commendable, adding that it demonstrated democracy in action.

Onuigbo also commended Tinubu’s economic policies and reforms, particularly the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the harmonisation of exchange rates and the removal of fuel subsidy.

He argued that subsidy removal had increased the resources available to the Federal Government and subnational governments for the provision of infrastructure and other public services.

“Tinubu has placed Nigeria on the path of prosperity, with an increase in GDP, where the GDP is now outpacing the nation’s population growth rate,” he said.

Onuigbo further highlighted developments in the country’s oil refining capacity and foreign reserves as evidence of progress under the current administration.

“From refining 30,000 barrels of oil per day in 2023, Nigeria now refines over 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, Nigeria’s foreign reserves have now hit over 58.1 billion dollars from 3.9 billion dollars in 2023,” he said.

He also cited the establishment of the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation as an initiative designed to broaden access to consumer credit for working Nigerians.

According to him, the country’s economic reforms have received recognition from international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Onuigbo expressed confidence that Tinubu, if re-elected, would further strengthen Nigeria’s position in the international community.

He also praised Tinubu and Wike for what he described as significant improvements in infrastructure development in Abuja, saying the APC-led Federal Government had made progress in addressing the capital’s longstanding infrastructure deficit.
