The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has won all 21 chairmanship and 346 councillorship seats in the Anambra State local government elections.
Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), Chinel Osakwe, announced the results on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters in Awka, the state capital.
Osakwe said the election was conducted across the state’s 21 local government areas and 362 electoral wards in line with the state’s electoral laws and guidelines.
She said the chairmanship election was uncontested in 20 local government areas, where APGA candidates participated in a “Yes” or “No” voting process.
The commission subsequently declared the APGA candidates elected after they secured overwhelming “Yes” votes in their respective areas.
In the only contested chairmanship election, in Anambra East Local Government Area, APGA’s Ifeamyi Chinweze polled 50,169 votes to defeat the Young Progressives Party (YPP) candidate, who secured 1,658 votes.

Osakwe said the commission had carefully considered the results submitted by the returning officer before declaring the candidate with the highest number of valid votes the winner.
She described the exercise as peaceful and said the commission had carried out its responsibilities with impartiality, transparency and diligence.
The ANSIEC chairman commended the people of Anambra for their confidence in the commission and praised security agencies and the media for their support during the electoral process.
Speaking on behalf of the newly elected council chairmen, the Ayamelum chairmanship-elect, Emmanuel Igwebuike, commended Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, ANSIEC, security agencies and the media for providing a conducive environment for the election.
Igwebuike pledged the support of the newly elected council chairmen for the governor’s development agenda and his vision of making Anambra a livable and prosperous state by 2070.
