The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has described Sports as a strategic tool for strengthening national cohesion, fostering international partnerships and advancing Nigeria’s broader security objectives.
He said peaceful competition and constructive engagement through sports complement military efforts to promote stability, strengthen relationships and build mutual understanding within and beyond Nigeria.
Shaibu stated this during the closing ceremony of the International Open Archery Championship at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites, Abuja on Sunday.
A statement issued Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, said the COAS described sports as more than physical fitness and recreation, noting their capacity to build trust, promote discipline and foster mutual understanding among diverse populations.
He said sporting engagements complement kinetic military operations by strengthening civil-military relations and promoting social cohesion as part of a broader approach to national security.

The Army Chief commended participating athletes for their discipline, dedication and sportsmanship, adding that international sporting events create opportunities for talent development, cultural exchange and stronger partnerships.
He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to supporting sporting initiatives that promote healthy competition, public trust and national development.
Earlier, the President of the Nigerian Archery Federation, Alhaji Mohammed Baba, commended the COAS and the Nigerian Army for supporting the championship and providing the venue.
He noted that such partnerships were important to the development of archery and the promotion of international sporting cooperation.

The championship, organised by the Nigerian Archery Federation, attracted participants from across Africa and other countries, providing a platform for competition and engagement through sport.
