The Bangladesh High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital has commemorated the second anniversary of the 2024 July Uprising, paying tribute to those who lost their lives while reaffirming the country’s commitment to democracy, justice, equality, human rights and the rule of law.
The July Uprising began in 2024 as a student-led movement over public sector job quotas before expanding into a nationwide mass movement demanding democratic reforms, justice and accountability.
The ceremony featured prayers, a minute’s silence, a documentary screening and goodwill messages from Bangladesh’s top government officials.
Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Miah Kabir, said the anniversary was a time to honour the sacrifices of those who died during the uprising and to uphold the values they fought for.
“The most meaningful way to honour the loyal Bangladeshis is to uphold the ideals for which they sacrificed their lives for justice, democracy, equality, rule of law, human rights, governance and national unity,” he said.
Stronger Relations
Kabir also called for stronger Nigeria-Bangladesh relations beyond trade, highlighting cooperation in culture and youth empowerment.
“We will continue our engagement to deepen our relationship, not only in terms of commercial trade, but also in culture and empowerment of youth,” he said.
Guest speaker Mrs. Rachael Neboh, Deputy Director and Head of Virtual Library Services at the National Library of Nigeria, described the uprising as a powerful example of youth-driven change.
“The July uprising is the voice of the youth. The voice of the youth is very strong. The voice of the youth is their power,” she said.

Neboh urged Nigerian youths to use social media responsibly, verify information before sharing it and channel their influence toward national development.
“Please, use your social media handles to post positive things. But check whatever information you want to send. Check it. Verify it,” she said.
She also encouraged young people to invest in skills, knowledge and innovation, stressing that the Bangladesh experience demonstrated how united youths could drive meaningful national transformation.
The protests in Bangladesh culminated in major political changes, including the resignation of then Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina on Aug. 5, 2024, and the establishment of an interim administration.
The anniversary is observed to honour those who lost their lives during the uprising and to reaffirm the country’s commitment to democracy and national unity.
