The Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for what it described as the transparent, free, fair and credible conduct of the Osun State governorship election.
In a statement signed by its Executive Secretary, Dr Yemisi Bamgbose, BON described the election as a “litmus test” for INEC, saying its outcome could serve as a model for subsequent elections in Nigeria if further improved upon.
The organisation said INEC deployed the resources and measures required to facilitate a free and fair election.
BON also commended security agencies for providing adequate security during the exercise, saying their efforts helped minimise tension and criminal activities.
However, the organisation called for the prosecution of persons involved in electoral offences, stressing that strict enforcement of electoral laws would serve as a deterrent to others.
BON urged INEC and other relevant agencies to ensure the enforcement of electoral laws and prosecution of all electoral offenders.
