Chairman Christian Association of Nigeria, Kano state Chapter Bishop John Namaza has called on Nigerians to ensure peaceful conduct of the 2023 general election set to commence in a few days across the nation.

Namaza who is also the Catholic Bishop of the Kano diocese stated this during a press briefing held at the Saint Louis Catholic Church, Kano state North-Western Nigeria.

He said peaceful conduct during the election is essential for Kano state and the country in general, as it provides hope for a better future, particularly for the youth of our society, who are the true ambassadors of the future.

He said elections that are fueled by violence in negligence of peace, through history do not achieve the desired democratic outcome as such Nigerians must embrace peace in the National and State elections that will come up on the 25th of February and 11th of March, 2023 respectively, urging people to vote for competent candidates

“Promote peace and vote for somebody with competence, ability, somebody who understands our problems and strong enough to work for the country,” he said.

“Voters should be civil in their conduct, vote early, and comply with all laws and regulations governing the electoral process beginning from the accreditation process, using the newly introduced Bimodal Voters Accreditation System, BVAS, to counting and announcement of results to ensure peace and orderliness,” he said.

He advised voters to direct complaints to security personnel or machinery put in place rather than resorting to disputes as well as tolerate other people’s opinions despite political affiliations, as respect for the views of others is key to maintaining civility.

“People should not believe everything seen on social media without proper verification to stop the spread of fake news that can cause problems,” he cautioned.

He called on politicians and their followers to accept the result of a free, fair and credible election but where in doubt and necessary, seek judicial means rather than take laws into their hands, which will in the end breach peace.

He added that acceptance of a credible election will enable the installation of a legitimate government, and promote stability and peaceful co-existence, which will in the end bring about political and socio-economic development as well as growth in the country.

He said trained observer groups by the church will also monitor the election.
