Cancer Control Needs Greater Investment – UICC President

Glory Ohagwu, Abuja

The President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, has called for increased investment in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment as she led ministers, cancer survivors and other stakeholders in the 12th edition of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation’s Walk Away Cancer campaign in Abuja.

Dr Shinkafi-Bagudu, who is also the Founder of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, made the call at Monoliza Park, Garki, Abuja, after a 5.4-kilometre awareness walk themed, “One Walk, One Fight”.

She emphasised the importance of early diagnosis in improving cancer outcomes, urging the government to increase budgetary allocations and ensure the timely release of funds for cancer control and treatment.

The UICC President reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening advocacy and mobilising collective action against the growing cancer burden.

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, described increased government allocation to the health sector as evidence of the Nigerian Government’s commitment to its social contract with citizens.

The programme also featured Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for eligible teenagers as part of efforts to promote preventive healthcare and raise awareness about cancer risks.

The foundation said the initiative was designed to encourage early detection, informed health-seeking behaviour and access to professional medical advice.

Beyond public awareness, the annual campaign provides a platform for mobilising financial and material support for cancer patients, particularly those facing difficulties accessing diagnosis and treatment.

Donations and proceeds from the campaign contribute to the foundation’s patient-support interventions.

The event attracted participation and support from government institutions, civil society organisations, advocates and members of the entertainment industry.

The Medicaid Cancer Foundation’s Walk Away Cancer campaign continues to promote collective responsibility in the fight against cancer, highlighting the need for sustained public awareness, stronger health financing and equitable access to cancer care.

Other dignitaries at the event included the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko; Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr Mariya Mahmoud; Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad; and Director-General of the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development, Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi.
