The speech was delivered as China commemorated the 90th anniversary of the Long March, the historic retreat undertaken by the Red Army between 1934 and 1935 to escape pursuing Nationalist forces led by Chiang Kai-shek.
The Long March, associated with Mao Zedong and the early development of the Chinese Communist Party, remains a significant event in China’s political history.
Xi’s remarks underscored the leadership’s emphasis on sustainable economic development, social stability and strengthening the country’s military capabilities.
