The Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule has commissioned three road projects funded by the three local governments in Nasarawa North Senatorial District as part of activities marking the 30th Anniversary of the state.
The projects comprise a 5-kilometre asphalt road in Akwanga Local Government Area and 1-kilometre township roads in each of Wamba and Nasarawa-Eggon Local Government Areas.
The commissioning ceremonies, held separately across the three local government areas, highlighted the role of local government administration in supporting the development agenda of the state government.
Governor Sule commended the chairmen of the three local governments for delivering what he described as “quality roads constructed with stone base and asphalt finishing.”
He said his administration’s decision to grant full autonomy to local governments to receive and manage their funds independently was deliberate and aimed at ensuring a functional and effective third tier of government.
According to the Governor, “the reforms introduced at the local government level were designed to reposition the councils for greater efficiency, effectiveness, transparency and accountability in governance.”
Governor Sule also appreciated traditional institutions across the zone for their support for governance at the grassroots, calling for sustained cooperation to deepen development.
In their separate remarks, the Executive Chairmen of Wamba, Akwanga and Nasarawa-Eggon Local Government Areas, Ezekiel Jagga, Safiyanu Isa Andaha and Iliya Ibn Aliyu, respectively, expressed gratitude to Governor Sule for his local government reforms.
They said “the autonomy had strengthened probity and accountability in the management of resources, and the foundation laid by the administration would outlive 2027.”
Also speaking, the Oriye Rindre of Wamba, Justice Lawal Musa Nagogo (Rtd); the Chun Mada of Akwanga, Pastor Samson Gamu Yare; and the Aren Eggon of Nasarawa-Eggon, Justice Ahmed Ubangari Alaku (Rtd), pledged the continued support of traditional institutions towards achieving the goals of grassroots development.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Aminu Maifata, clarified that since the assumption of office in 2019, the state government had not tampered with funds accruing to local governments.
He described contrary claims as false.
The commissioning ceremonies were attended by government officials, party stakeholders and traditional rulers.
