Cross River Assembly Commits to People-Focused Legislation

The Cross River State House of Assembly has reiterated its steadfast dedication to creating legislation that prioritises the needs of the people, as the members celebrate three years of uninterrupted service in the 10th legislature.

The Speaker of the 10th assembly, Elvert Ayambem made the pledge during a special thanksgiving service attended by the legislators, the Assembly Service Commission and other legislative staff held in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State.

Ayambem, who expressed gratitude to the Almighty for the protection, guidance and preservation of legislators, their families and staff, said that within the three years of the Governor Bassey Otu administration, laws carefully designed to positively impact the lives and livelihoods of citizens were passed.

According to him, the assembly passed “the Social Protection and Investment Programme Agency law; the Open Defecation Prohibition law, the Cross River State Rural Access Roads Authority Amendment law amongst others.”

The Speaker also used the occasion to appreciate the lawmakers for their cooperation over the past three years.

He noted that the peaceful working environment drive, the support of assembly staff and the overall effort to serve the people were a testament to the number of legislation passed within three years.

According to the Speaker, “we are really thankful to the Almighty that this 10th assembly has witnessed no loss of any member. In fact, due to the cordial relationship amongst us, we have created a record, set a precedence never set in the history of the Cross River State Assembly.

“The 10th assembly has been adjudged one of the best legislatures in the country with over thirty bills passed and assented to amongst other numerous legislative achievements, making ours a model for other states.

“I must commend the clerk, Catherine Ubi including the management and the staff for their hard work and commitment, which has ensured a conducive atmosphere for the smooth operations of the Legislature.”

“We pledge our commitment to people-centered legislation in line with the People’s First mantra of the Governor Bassey Otu.”

During the thanksgiving service, other lawmakers reflected on their journey over the past three years, attributing the entire being and good health to God’s abundant grace and mercy irrespective of the challenges along the way .

In his homily tittled “The Power of Gratitude”, Reverend Father Bob Etta emphasised that the significance of thanksgiving as a form of acknowledging God’s sovereignty and strengthen.

The priest acknowledged that the thanksgiving service was one of the best ways the assembly chose to appreciate God for the guidance, protection and privilege enjoyed while serving their constituents and State.

The thanksgiving service was characterised by choir ministrations, prayers for the Nation, State and Nigeria’s entire 10th legislature.
