The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) has condemned the killing of 27 persons in communities in Plateau State, describing the incident as a grave violation of human dignity and a threat to national peace. The Secretariat urged relevant authorities to swiftly identify, arrest, and bring to justice those responsible.

The victims were reportedly attacked on the evening of March 29, 2026, in Angwan Rukuba, Gari Ya Waye, and Atakyu communities in North-Central Nigeria.

In a statement jointly signed by the Secretary General of CSN, Rev. Fr. Michael Banjo, and the National Director of Social Communications, Rev. Fr. Michael Umoh, the organisation expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, which coincided with Palm Sunday—one of the most sacred observances in the Christian calendar.

The Secretariat noted that while Christians across the country commemorated the day in honour of the Prince of Peace, the affected communities were subjected to violence, resulting in loss of lives and widespread grief. It described the attack not only as a serious security lapse but also as a desecration of the sanctity of human life.

Reaffirming the provisions of Section 14(2)(b) of the Nigerian Constitution, the CSN stressed that the protection of lives and property remains the fundamental responsibility of government. It raised concerns over the recurring nature of such attacks, warning that they continue to undermine citizens’ confidence in national security structures.

In line with its call for accountability and good governance, the Secretariat urged government at all levels, alongside security agencies, to take decisive and proactive measures. These include thorough investigations into the incident, possible lapses in security response, strengthened intelligence gathering, and enhanced protection for vulnerable communities.

The CSN also emphasised the need for immediate humanitarian interventions, including medical care and support for affected families.

While appealing to Nigerians to remain calm and avoid reprisals, the Secretariat called for unity and collective commitment to peace. It offered prayers for the repose of the victims, healing for the injured, and comfort for bereaved families while expressing hope for lasting peace and security across the nation.
