DataPro, a Nigerian provider of verification and background-screening services, has introduced an artificial intelligence-powered Know Your Customer (KYC) and background-verification system aimed at helping businesses strengthen identity checks and fraud-risk management.
The Managing Director/CEO of DataPro, Mr. Abimbola Adeseyoju said the system combines automated verification with human review to assess customers and identify cases requiring additional scrutiny.
According to him, low-risk cases can undergo automated verification, while unusual or higher-risk cases are referred to analysts for further assessment.
Adeseyoju said “the system is designed to support organisations that conduct customer onboarding and due diligence through digital channels, where businesses increasingly require faster identity verification while maintaining safeguards against fraud and other financial crimes.”
He said the KYC approach goes beyond confirming an individual’s identity to examining available information on customers and corporate entities for potential financial, reputational and compliance risks.
According to the company, the system can support checks involving corporate records, educational and professional credentials, employment history and criminal records, depending on the requirements of individual organisations.
For pension administrators, DataPro said its verification process for annuitants includes liveness checks to establish that the person being verified is physically present, alongside other information used in the assessment process.
The company said the use of automated verification could reduce the number of cases requiring manual intervention and support faster customer onboarding and compliance processes.
DataPro, however, said artificial intelligence would complement rather than replace human expertise, particularly in cases involving complex or higher-risk verification results.
The development comes amid increasing regulatory attention to the use of technology in combating financial crime and strengthening customer due diligence in Nigeria’s financial sector.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been developing standards for the use of automated anti-money laundering solutions, covering areas including customer due diligence, risk profiling and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in financial-risk assessment.
The CBN’s approach reflects the wider adoption of digital technologies within Nigeria’s financial and payments ecosystem, where institutions are seeking ways to manage growing volumes of digital transactions while addressing fraud and compliance risks.
DataPro said the increasing sophistication of fraud and evolving regulatory requirements had made reliable customer verification an important component of risk management.
The company said its new system was intended to help organisations identify potential risks during customer onboarding, while maintaining human oversight in cases requiring further investigation.
The development adds to the growing use of artificial intelligence in identity verification, compliance and fraud-risk management as Nigerian businesses and financial institutions expand their digital operations.
