Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has paid tribute to former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, as well as the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, in recognition of their contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.
The tribute was contained in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed, to mark the nation’s 27th Democracy Day celebration.
Governor Radda described the three distinguished Katsina sons as statesmen whose contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey remain enduring and significant.
He congratulated the people of Katsina State and Nigerians across the country on Democracy Day, describing June 12 as a symbol of the collective resolve of Nigerians to embrace freedom, justice and democratic governance.
According to the Governor, the day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriotic Nigerians to secure and sustain the democratic system the country enjoys today.
Paying tribute to the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Governor Radda said his courage and unwavering commitment to national progress helped lay the foundation for Nigeria’s democratic transition.
He also honoured the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, whom he described as a leader who devoted his life to the service of the nation in both military and civilian capacities.
The Governor said Buhari remained steadfast in promoting national unity and upholding the rule of law throughout his years of public service.
On the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Governor Radda said his administration was distinguished by respect for constitutional governance and a deep commitment to the welfare of Nigerians.
“Katsina is proud of these great Nigerians. They did not serve their state alone; they gave themselves fully to a nation they believed in. Their sacrifices remind us of what true leadership looks like, and we carry their legacies as a guide,” he said.
Governor Radda also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his longstanding commitment to democratic ideals and the struggle for democratic governance in Nigeria.
“Long before ascending to the presidency, President Tinubu was a frontline defender of democracy and one of the leading figures in the struggle that gave June 12 its enduring significance,” the Governor stated.
He noted that President Tinubu’s consistent advocacy for civil liberties, popular participation and the rule of law has made a lasting impact on Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
Governor Radda called on Nigerians to reflect on the significance of Democracy Day and recommit themselves to the values of accountability, justice and the protection of citizens’ rights.
He also urged residents of Katsina State to continue supporting good governance, peaceful coexistence and the developmental initiatives of his administration.
“Democracy is not just a system of government; it is a promise we make to one another as a people. On this day, let us renew that promise and work together to build a Katsina State and a Nigeria that every citizen can be proud of,” he said.
