The ECOWAS Commission has signed strategic cooperation agreements with the International Fertiliser Development Centre, IFDC and the Mano River Union, MRU on the margins of the 2026 ECOWAS Mid-Year Statutory Meetings in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
The Commission reaffirms its commitment to strengthening regional integration, sustainable development, agricultural transformation and peacebuilding across West Africa.
The agreements were signed by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Tourey, on behalf of ECOWAS, Mr. Thiam Bayella, Chief Operating Officer, signed on behalf of IFDC, while Ambassador Simeon Moribah, Secretary-General of the Mano River Union, signed on behalf of the MRU.
ECOWAS Commission said; “The Memorandum of Understanding with IFDC establishes a framework for enhanced collaboration in promoting sustainable soil fertility management, strengthening fertiliser systems, supporting climate-smart agriculture, and improving agricultural productivity across the region.”
The partnership will also support the implementation of the Lomé and the Nairobi Declarations on Fertiliser and Soil Health, thereby contributing to improved food and nutrition security and greater resilience of agricultural systems in ECOWAS Member States.
According to the Commission, “The Cooperation Agreement with the Mano River Union aims to deepen institutional collaboration in peacebuilding, cross-border governance, economic transformation and the sustainable management of shared natural resources.”
The agreements underscore the shared commitment of both organisations to promoting regional peace, stability, and socio-economic development while reinforcing integration efforts within the Mano River Basin and the wider ECOWAS region.
