The Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture has announced the preparation of 8.4 billion seedlings nationwide for the 2025 edition of the Green Legacy environmental campaign—900 million more than initially planned.
In an interview on Tuesday with Fana Media Corporation, a partner of TV BRICS, Shanko Tessa, Head of the Watershed Development Desk at the Ministry, noted that the initial target was 7.5 billion seedlings.
However, thanks to active preparation, it was possible to significantly exceed expectations.
Tessa said that the campaign covers 1.9 million hectares of land, of which 1.5 million hectares had already been recognised as suitable for planting.
While, detailed tree placement maps have been developed for 492,000 hectares.
He said that to date, over 518.9 million seedlings have been planted and 3.1 billion planting holes have been prepared.
He noted that work continues ahead of the main planting season.
Over 116,000 locations nationwide, including government agencies, schools, farms, private and religious organizations, are implementing environmental initiatives across the country effectively.
A national coordination committee, comprising representatives from multiple sectors, has been established to oversee the campaign’s progress, conducting weekly assessments to ensure its effectiveness.
