Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party has secured another parliamentary majority in this month’s elections, according to results released by the national election board on Sunday.
The ruling party was widely expected to dominate the polls amid a fragmented opposition landscape. Abiy, who became prime minister in 2018 following mass protests against the long-ruling EPRDF coalition, established the Prosperity Party in 2019 as part of his political reforms.
The latest victory reinforces the party’s strong grip on power after it won more than 90 per cent of the available seats in the 2021 Parliament elections.
