FCT High Courts Set for Digital Transformation

By Hudu Yakubu, Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the award of contracts for the digitisation of the FCT High Courts.

The FCT General Counsel, Mr Salman Dako, disclosed this on Tuesday after the FCT Executive Council meeting chaired by the Minister in Abuja.

Dako said the project was aimed at replacing manual record-keeping with a digital system for court recording and case management.

According to him, the project will cover 67 courtrooms across the FCT.

“The scope of this project is the digitalisation of the High Courts in the FCT, including digital transformation and implementation of an electronic court recording and case management system.

“This means that we are transitioning the High Court from manual recording to digital recording and electronic case management,” he said.

Dako said the FCT judiciary had for years faced challenges associated with handwritten court records, manual filing procedures and physical case tracking.

He said the digitisation project was designed to address some of the challenges associated with manual documentation and record management.

“Transitioning to digital court management will resolve the persistent challenges linked to manual documentation and handwritten records,” he said.

The General Counsel stated that the new system would also enable legal practitioners and litigants to file cases electronically.

“I believe that this will be a very great improvement for us. Some judicial divisions have already started this outside the FCT, so I think this is the future and it is time we go along this route,” he said.

Dako said the contract had a two-week implementation period, with progress expected on key aspects of the project within that period.

He said the digital platform, when fully operational, would support more efficient court administration in the FCT.
