By Hudu Yakubu, Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved contracts worth N31.49 billion for the provision and installation of solar and modular hybrid solar streetlights at selected locations across the territory.

The overseeing Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Mrs Mary Ahmadu, disclosed this on Tuesday after the FCT Administration Executive Council meeting chaired by the minister in Abuja.

Ahmadu said the council also considered and approved several proposals on infrastructure and environmental management presented by the AMMC and other agencies under its supervision.

She said the solar streetlight projects were intended to improve lighting along key locations and enhance visibility at night.

The overseeing coordinator also announced the ratification of contracts for the extension of solid waste collection and management services across 40 delineated districts in the FCT.

According to her, the waste management contracts were valued at N5.96 billion.

Ahmadu said the council also ratified contracts for the operation and maintenance of the Wupa Basin Sewage Treatment Plant for a 24-month period, valued at N2.21 billion.

She added that contracts for the routine maintenance and management of facilities across selected FCTA departments and public buildings were also ratified.

The contracts were valued at N1.52 billion and N106.16 million, respectively.

“There was also the ratification of the evacuation and routine maintenance of communal waste collection points along the Umar Musa Yar’Adua Way for a two-year period under the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), valued at N488.39 million,” she said.

Ahmadu said the approvals were part of measures to sustain infrastructure and environmental management across the FCT.
