By Ene Okwanihe, Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has assured residents of adequate security during Nigeria’s 2026 Independence Day celebration, while warning criminal elements to stay away from the territory.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Sanusi, gave the assurance in a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

Sanusi, on behalf of the officers and men of the Command, congratulated residents on the nation’s Independence Day and wished them a peaceful and memorable celebration.

He urged residents to use the occasion to reflect on the values of independence, particularly unity, togetherness, peace, patriotism and collective responsibility.

The police commissioner also issued a strong warning to criminal elements and others who might attempt to exploit the festivities to commit crimes.

“The FCT cannot and will not be a lucrative playing field for criminal activities,” the Command said, advising criminally minded persons to vacate the territory or desist from unlawful activities.

According to the statement, the Command remains committed to identifying, arresting and prosecuting anyone found engaging in criminal activities.
