The Federal Capital Territory Civil Service Commission (FCT-CSC) and the Office of the Head of Civil Service, FCTA, have partnered to prepare workers for the transition from active service to retirement.
The partnership was highlighted at a one-day workshop held on Tuesday in Abuja with the theme “How to Triumph in Retirement”.
The workshop focused on helping public servants prepare for life after active service, with sessions covering financial planning and terminal benefits, entrepreneurship, health management, and legacy and community engagement.
In her opening remarks, the Acting Head of the Civil Service, FCTA, Mrs Nancy Sabanti Nathan, said successful retirement should involve finding new sources of purpose and fulfilment beyond official responsibilities.
Nathan also said the FCTA was committed to improving the processing of retirees’ terminal benefits to facilitate a smoother transition from active service.
The Chairman of the FCT-CSC, Engr Emeka Ezeh, said retirement preparation was part of the commission’s responsibilities under Section 7(c)(ii) of its Establishment Act.
He said workers’ productivity could be affected by concerns about their post-service welfare and called for measures that would provide greater certainty around career progression and retirement.
Ezeh highlighted several administrative reforms, including the harmonisation of personnel records through a unified database, the resolution of promotion backlogs for 2023, 2024 and 2025, and the adoption of computer-based testing for promotions.
He also cited the development of standard operating procedures covering appointments, discipline, conversion and career advancement.
According to him, the reforms were intended to improve career progression and ensure that workers retire at the appropriate grade levels.
Ezeh said the reforms were being implemented under the leadership of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in alignment with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Organisers said the retirement-preparation workshop would become an annual programme on the FCTA calendar, allowing serving workers to receive guidance well ahead of their retirement.
The initiative is expected to combine financial literacy, health awareness and administrative guidance to help workers prepare for life after public service.
