FCTA Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Transport Operations

By Hudu Yakubu Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), through its Transportation Secretariat, has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling criminal activities linked to illegal public transport operations across Abuja.

The Mandate Secretary of the FCTA Transportation Secretariat, Mr Chinedum Elechi, made the declaration on Monday during the continuation of an enforcement operation at the unauthorized motor park popularly known as Jabi Upstairs.

Represented by Mr Usman Abdulmumin, Elechi said the operation aligns with the directive of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to eliminate criminal activities associated with illegal motor parks and other unauthorized transport locations across the Federal Capital Territory.

He explained that the enforcement exercise, which commenced on 1 July, is aimed at ensuring that all commercial vehicles operate from the Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminal, in line with the administration’s transport management framework.

Elechi also disclosed that vehicles impounded on the first day of the operation would be released to their owners after they complete the required documentation and undertake not to return to illegal loading points.

“The vehicles will be released after their owners complete the necessary documentation and give assurances that they will no longer operate from illegal parks,” he said.

Also speaking, the secretary of the FCTA Command and Control Centre in the Security Services Department, Dr Peter Olumuji, said allowing illegal motor parks to operate in the nation’s capital could undermine law and order.

He noted that personnel from the FCT Security Services Department are participating in the enforcement exercise to ensure full compliance with the directive, adding that adequate security presence is essential to sustain the operation.

Olumuji further stated that the commencement of operations at the Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminal, alongside the enforcement exercise, has contributed to a more organised and orderly public transport system within the Federal Capital Territory.

The Director of Transport Planning and Institutional Development at Planet Projects Limited, Mr Demola Olawepo, said the terminal has adequate security and operational measures in place to ensure the safety of passengers.

According to him, the introduction of the terminal has significantly reduced security concerns previously associated with commercial transport operations in Abuja.

A passenger, Mr Hamzat Gumil, commended the coordinated transport system, describing his experience at the terminal as organised and satisfactory.

“This is my first time using the terminal, and I am impressed. Everything I have seen so far is well organised and satisfactory,” he said.
