Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on wives of police officers to embrace resilience, pursue personal development and prioritise their mental wellbeing, saying empowered women play a vital role in building stronger families, communities and the nation.
Represented by Mrs. Lilian Oghogho Musa, the First Lady made the call at the 2026 Annual General Convention of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) in Abuja.
Addressing participants on the convention’s theme, “The Resilient Woman: Navigating Life’s Challenges with Strength, Purpose and Grace”, Tinubu acknowledged the unique responsibilities carried by police officers’ spouses, noting that their sacrifices contribute significantly to national security.
“As wives of police officers, you shoulder enormous responsibilities at home while supporting husbands whose duties often keep them away. Your patience, encouragement and sacrifices provide the stability that enables them to serve our nation,” she said.
The First Lady stressed that while police officers’ wives play indispensable roles in supporting their families, their own physical and mental wellbeing must also receive adequate attention.
She encouraged the women to continue acquiring new skills, supporting one another and creating opportunities that would improve their families’ livelihoods and strengthen their communities.
“Continue to learn, develop yourselves, support one another and create opportunities that uplift your families and communities. When a woman is empowered, the benefits extend far beyond her home,” she added.
Tinubu congratulated the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, and members of the association’s leadership for organising the convention before declaring it officially open.
Earlier, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, commended the association for its unwavering support to police officers and their families, describing POWA as an important partner in promoting welfare and community development.
“Behind every dedicated police officer is a family that provides strength, encouragement and stability. I sincerely appreciate every member of POWA for the sacrifices and support you render every day,“ the IGP said.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to improving the welfare of officers and their families through programmes focused on healthcare, education, skills acquisition, women’s empowerment and social development.
In her welcome address, the POWA National President, Chief Mrs. Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, described the convention as a celebration of the resilience and commitment of police officers’ wives, whose contributions often go unnoticed.
“This gathering celebrates women whose sacrifices are rarely seen but whose strength continues to sustain families and support the Nigeria Police Force,” she said.
Disu urged participants not to equate resilience with silent endurance, encouraging them instead to seek support whenever necessary.
“Resilience means choosing hope despite uncertainty, drawing strength from adversity and refusing to let life’s challenges define your future. It should never mean suffering in silence,” she said.
She disclosed that since assuming office, POWA had provided healthcare support to more than 1,000 police families, expanded economic empowerment initiatives and strengthened assistance for widows and children of fallen police officers.
The POWA president encouraged participants to return to their communities inspired and empowered.
“Leave stronger than you came. Remember that your sacrifices matter, your voices are important and your future is filled with hope. When a police officer’s wife thrives, the family grows stronger, the Police Force becomes stronger and Nigeria becomes safer,” she added.
