Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, has called for greater commitment to the wellbeing of African children as Nigeria joins the rest of the Continent in commemorating the International Day of the African Child.
In a message marking the occasion, the First Lady urged governments, communities and stakeholders to sustain child-friendly environments that support the growth, protection and development of children across Africa and beyond.
Mrs Tinubu also emphasised the need for adequate provision of potable water and clean environments, noting that “access to basic necessities is essential for promoting the health and wellbeing of children.”
She said; “on this Day of the African Child 2026, I join Nigerians and the rest of the continent in advocating for the rights and well-being of every African child under the theme: ‘Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation, and hygiene for every child in Africa.’
“Access to clean water, proper sanitation, and good hygiene is essential for the well-being, health, dignity, education, and future of our children. Our children, regardless of their background, should have access to the basic amenities needed to grow, learn, and thrive.”
“I believe all hands must be on deck to build child-friendly communities, strengthen public health systems, and create safe, healthy environments where every child can thrive and reach their full potential. Happy Day of the African Child 2026,” the Wife of the Nigerian President said.
