The Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has received the final report of the Taskforce Committee on the Reforms and Revitalisation of Basic and Technical Education.
Governor Yahaya described the document as a critical blueprint for fundamentally transforming the state’s education sector.
Governor Yahaya, while receiving the report in Gombe, gave the assurance that his administration would commence its implementation immediately.
He said the move was consistent with his administration’s commitment to repositioning basic and technical education for greater efficiency and improved learning outcomes.
The governor said the recommendations would provide a strategic roadmap for developing a skilled and future-ready workforce capable of driving the economy of Gombe State, as well as its social transformation.
He described education as the cornerstone of his administration’s development agenda and stressed the need for bold policy decisions to address longstanding challenges confronting the sector.
Governor Yahaya, who received the report from renowned educationist and former Kaduna State Commissioner for Education, Tom Mataimaki Maiyashi, in the presence of the Commissioner for Education and Chairperson of the Taskforce, Associate Professor Aishatu Umar Maigari, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to aligning education reforms with the state’s 10-year development agenda, DEVAGOM.
“On the report, I want to assure you that we are not going to abandon this document. We shall study it immediately and begin implementation of the recommendations,” the governor said.
Governor Yahaya stressed that sustainable development could only be achieved through an education system capable of meeting the needs of the state and its people, disclosing that major structural changes were already being introduced in the education sector.
He cited the recent merger of the Ministries of Higher Education and Education into a single ministry, saying the move is intended to strengthen coordination, improve policy implementation and enhance service delivery across the different levels of education.
Presenting the report on behalf of the committee, Maiyashi commended Governor Yahaya for what he described as visionary leadership and foresight in establishing the taskforce.
He said the governor’s investments in education had provided a strong foundation for sustainable development, while the report offered an honest assessment of the challenges facing basic and technical education in the state.
Maiyashi said the committee’s recommendations were practical, realistic and implementable, urging the state government to commence execution in earnest.
He expressed confidence that faithful implementation would significantly transform Gombe’s education system and position the state as a model of educational excellence in Nigeria.
The Commissioner of Education, Dr. Maigari, said the taskforce was inaugurated in November 2025 with a mandate to undertake a comprehensive assessment of basic and technical education in Gombe State and develop actionable strategies for revitalising the sector.
Dr. Maigari said the committee examined challenges relating to teachers, infrastructure, governance and administration, student welfare and learning conditions, as well as security and community issues affecting schools.
According to the commissioner, the committee’s findings were carefully collated and translated into eight priority reform clusters requiring immediate government intervention.
She expressed appreciation to Governor Yahaya for the political will demonstrated through the establishment of the high-powered committee, which brought together experienced education experts and policymakers.
