The Committee of Youth on Mobilisation and Sensitisation (CYMS) has renewed its call for full local government autonomy to strengthen grassroots development, youth participation and service delivery across Nigeria.
The organisation made the call during a mentorship and stakeholder engagement session in Abaji, Abuja, where it presented an Award of Excellent Performance to the Executive Chairman of Abaji Area Council, Abubakar Umar Abdullahi, for his reported contributions to community development and youth empowerment.
Director-General of CYMS, Chief Obinna Nwaka, said the chairman was honoured for initiatives in education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, community welfare, and youth development.
He stated that effective governance at the local level brings government closer to the people, particularly underserved communities.
Speaking at the event, Abdullahi reiterated the need for greater local government autonomy, arguing that councils are better positioned to address local challenges, including roads, primary healthcare, and basic education.
He urged young Nigerians to prepare for leadership through discipline, competence, and a strong sense of purpose.
CYMS Director of Contacts and Mobilisation, Kelechi Ugwumba, also called for deeper collaboration with the Abaji Area Council through mentorship, sensitisation, and stakeholder engagement.
He reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to advocating stronger local government institutions nationwide.
